{"id":562,"date":"2024-06-19T15:27:26","date_gmt":"2024-06-19T15:27:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/presentgreat.com\/?p=562"},"modified":"2024-10-08T21:16:53","modified_gmt":"2024-10-08T21:16:53","slug":"influence-the-audience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/presentgreat.com\/ar\/influence-the-audience\/","title":{"rendered":"The Power of Public Speaking for Retired Athletes Turned Entrepreneurs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Many public speaking and presenting fundamentals can by applied to participation in meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s one scenario that I experienced many years ago when I was in middle management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was invited to a meeting that I hadn\u2019t been to before and there was a mixture of people including some very senior leaders &#8211;&nbsp; Some of whom are very smart, insightful and expect that the other attendees contribute meaningfully.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I observed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meeting dynamics: who speaks up, who does not, who is willing to challenge others and who shouldn\u2019t be challenged, is there a lot of data, who wants data and who does not, what kind updates and answers do different senior leaders prefer, who speaks up and who does not even though they should.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your role has NOT&nbsp; been provided to you prior to a meeting, how can you take advantage of the opportunity. Which leads to the rhetorical question of: why would you not leverage this opportunity????<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can consolidate the answer to how to take advantage of this opportunity into 2 questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>What insight can you gain by just by listening that will help you going forward?<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For the next time you\u2019re invited, what insight\/information can you bring that will benefit those that attend this meeting and then get you consistently invited back because you bring value.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where you employ the same techniques that you would use to prepare for a presentation. \u201cPreparation\u201d is the key word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note 1 There are still people and hope it\u2019s not you, that don\u2019t bring a note pad to meetings. Some may take notes on a laptop. Write\/type take aways, ideas, reminders, insights, prep ideas for next time, notes to remind you of something you want to add later in the meeting\u2026\u2026. That\u2019s a lesson I only needed to learn once and consistently made adjustments to bring more and more value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note 2: : Each company has it\u2019s own culture when it comes to meetings and that culture can change based upon who is the most senior person in attendance.&nbsp; You\u2019ll have to decide how\/when you participate based on this.&nbsp; Either way, the abbreviated list below is always appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How can you help your boss be better prepared?\u00a0 They most likely have more topics to be familiar with then you do.\u00a0 Can you help them out by providing key info and insights prior to the meeting that they may need.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>For example: can you provide data in a different format that provides new insight or inform them of recent conversations and outcomes so they can share or bring latest updates on projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make sure you are the absolute SME (subject matter expert) within your role.\u00a0 Why? When questions come up that involve your daily job, you can provide the most valuable response and then the team begins to count on you going forward &#8211; this applies to all levels of the company..\u00a0 I always like to say \u201ctell them something they don\u2019t know\u201d (as long as it\u2019s helpful)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understand if there is a pattern as to <strong>who<\/strong> is asking <strong>what<\/strong> kinds of questions and anticipate\/prepare responses for the next meeting &#8211; as long as it\u2019s within your role.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>For example: Some want charts and detail, others may just want a high level overview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ask yourself if there are opportunities to advance ideas that you can contribute to and note them for the next meeting &#8211; tell them what they want to know before they ask..<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s the key word???&nbsp; Prepare.&nbsp; It\u2019s a career building technique that we can steal from presentation prep coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve posted about preparation a lot.&nbsp; Here\u2019s another example where it worked very well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Article on Steve Jobs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/money\/smallbusiness\/bill-gates-says-steve-jobs-made-presentations-look-natural-because-he-rehearsed\/ar-BB1kpRxc?ocid=msedgntp&#038;pc=LCTS&#038;cvid=a072359127454479a887caedd8c7da13&#038;ei=63\">Bill Gates Says Steve Jobs Made Presentations Look Natural Because He Rehearsed (msn.com)<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many public speaking and presenting fundamentals can by applied to participation in meetings.
